The tragedy of events like this is seen in the intensification of charges to manipulate the individual for the purpose of betraying other human beings. If the charges are valid then the person so charged may reasonably expect some form of legally described government action. If that action includes a plea agreement that compromises the individual's integrity and trustworthiness then it becomes the sole duty of that individual to decide whether or not betrayal of others is within the boundaries of his own conscience. Plea agreements are common - even plea agreements that require a person to betray friends and relatives. Unfortunately, as you note in your article, the law is occasionally employed as an abusive means for the government to compromise the integrity of citizens through the importation and application of false charges. No words other than 'oppressive' and 'tyrannical' describe government behaviors of this nature. When I scan my own conscience as to the decision I would make in similar circumstances I am certain it would be my behavior to fully defend myself against the charges, perhaps in the false hope that some form of justice would prevail. At the very least, I would know the souls of the men involved in the entrapment and it would be at them I would direct the substance of my ire. Rule of law is not an arbitrary agreement betweent the citizen and his government; persons who exploit those laws, who abuse the power they hold, destroy the foundation of trust that is so essential to personal liberty and security. The vehicles of poison are just as loathsome as the poison itself; it thus follows that those individuals who made the decision to exploit this man's vulnerabilies, or anyone's vulnerabilities, are souless men, deserving neither mutual regard or a continuation of duty owed.
